Day 018 (19 Jan 2023) - Surabaya, Indonesia
DAY 018 (19 JAN 2023) – Today is a day of rest. No long bike rides. Instead, I was a pillion passenger on Imam’s motorbike, while he took me around Surabaya City. This is the 2nd largest city in Indonesia.
I was fascinated with this unique statue of a shark and a crocodile, situated in front of the Surabaya Zoo. This statue is a symbol of the city of Surabaya – Sura means shark and Baya means crocodile. Interestingly, shark is also called 'Sura' in Tamil! After all, we do have a historical and cultural connection! And of course, crocodile is called 'buaya' in Bahasa Melayu.
At about 7 pm in the evening, I left by ferry from Pelabuhan Tanjung Perak to Labuan Bajo, Nusa Tenggara.
The ferry journey will take about 36 hours! The ticket charges include Rs 900,000 (about RM 255) for the bike, Rs 500, 000 (RM 142) for passenger and Rs 400,000 (RM 114) for room. Meals are included in the ticket price. Will arrive at Labuan Bajo on the 21st of Jan 2023.
While in Surabaya, Imam treated me to lunch and dinner. This kind man refused to let me pay for anything! Before boarding the ferry, I checked out early from my hotel - Imam let me take rest in his house. He even followed me to the ferry terminal and made sure I boarded the ferry safely. I am very grateful for his kind hospitality and assistance. Terima Kasih, Imam!
