Day 111 (22 Apr 2023) - Sendai to Matsushima to Fukushima Plant, Japan
DAY 111 (22 APR 2023) – Reached the beautiful city of Sendai yesterday and took a short trip to Matsushima, about an hour away (40 km) from Sendai City.
I had some delicious ‘sushi’ and rice at a local restaurant and met some friendly locals. Japanese people are very friendly and I must say I am loving Japanese food very much!
I am enjoying my road trip in Japan, riding through beautiful terrains and mountainous landscapes.
I did get to see a lot of beautiful trees unique to Japan, especially the famous cherry blossom or ‘sakura’ trees along the road.
The weather was cold at a temperature of 11 C. At times, the cold breezy wind was so strong, I could feel the winds pushing me towards the opposite side of the road - even while riding at a speed limit of 60 km per hour! My heavy bike could withstand the wind, but I had to be extra careful. From my conversations with many locals, it is apparently dangerous for small motorbikes to ride in such conditions.
Later, I rode my bike to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, which was about a 2-hour ride (82 km) from my hostel in Sendai. Of course, since it’s a high security vicinity, I was not allowed in, neither was I allowed to take any pictures - not even the entrance from the outside!
Just to recall, this is the site where a nuclear disaster occurred as a result of a powerful earthquake and tsunami that affected the Tohoku region, including Fukushima and Sendai, back in March of 2011. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan. All affected areas today have gone back to normalcy.
